A priestly King or a Kingly priest, which is it?
Genesis Chapter 14
This is the question, who is Melchizedek?
After his return from the
defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went
out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). And
Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God
Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered
your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. He was an
earthly King of Salem and he was a priest of the most high God. Yes, I know simple
answer, no great revelation there. Some people over the years have tried to say
he was the pre-incarnate Christ, some of the Jews from the second Temple period
have equated him with something that has been called the ‘two powers’ in heaven
theory. I will go a little more in depth with that thought when we look at
Sodom and Gomorrah. I do not hold to either of these. He is important, he is mentioned by the
author of Hebrews in relation to the Messiah (Christ) Hebrews Chapter 7 -
“You
are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” “The Lord has sworn and
will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” This also appears in
Psalm 110 verse 5. Melchizedek was an earthly king who God used to
show the example of the office/position that was needed, a King and High priest
all in one. Just as Jesus is referred in different places as the Second Adam,
not that he was Adam, but he came to do what Adam did not or could not do. He
is also a priest after the order of Melchizedek, not him but better, Jesus is described
also by the author of Hebrews 4:14 as Since then we have a “great high
priest” who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God. So,
Melchizedek reflects what was to come. Now here is where I get you thinking,
Adam, Melchizedek were examples of real people and they had positions, jobs, titles,
and Jesus was the best replacement for lack of a better word. Who then was the one,
the High priest that Jesus would/did replace in the Heavenly realm? Who was in
that position in the heavenly temple (realm), someone who was given the keys to
Death and Hades, someone who could put all those who were considered unclean (sinners)
outside the camp and not let them in to sacred space (Heaven). Someone who was anointed.
Someone of great authority, who could possibly abuse such authority. Yes, it
begs the question was there a spiritual being, a son of God like that in that position,
in the temple of God?
