Psalm 12
1 To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone;
for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
2 Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;
with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,
4those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
5 “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the LORD; “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.” The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.
7 You, O LORD, will keep them; you will guard us from this generation forever.
8 On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man.
In verse one David laments that the godly one is gone and the faithful have vanished. Feeling alone even when we are truly not is not an unusual feeling. Here's what google says on the matter.
(Everyone googles right?)
- Feeling alone even when surrounded by people has become a common experience in 2025, despite the increased connectivity provided by technology and social media.
This paradox is often attributed to the quality of connections rather than the quantity, as people may feel isolated in social settings due to a lack of meaningful interaction.
Studies show that up to 60% of people in urban areas and 45% in rural areas regularly feel lonely or isolated.
- I wonder if the godly one that David referred to was the prophet Samuel and David was mourning his passing. Commentaries and scholars seem to think David isn't referring to anyone in particular, but I wonder if Samuel passed while Saul was hunting for David and he was in hiding. One commentary writer said because Samuel was loved by the people they couldn't imagine Saul would seize an opportunity to get David because he was honoring Samuel at a funeral. Even Samuel hid the real reason from Saul that he went to anoint David to be the next King of Israel. They're ignoring the fact that Saul wasn’t overly concerned about honoring Samuel's direction (GOD's ) word when he was alive, why would that change now that he's dead?
- David's words that the faithful had vanished and people were uttering lies, flattering lips, and secret motives. This could speak to Saul's advisors and all those that wanted David out of the picture. They would see him as a threat to the throne and the fact that the family of Saul would loose their status if they lost the monarchy.
- look what David says through the Spirit in verse 5 because the poor are plundered and the needy groan the LORD will arise. Jesus arose for us and carried captivity captive. Ephesians 4:8 Jesus rescued the poor and needy and does the same for you and me.
- verse seven his word is pure, that's Jesus.
- He will guard us forever, that's eternal life with him.
- David's Psalm ends on a low note (pun intended) because he was on that side of the cross, ours however is a high note because we've seen and experienced this side of the cross.
- yes the wicked still prowl and vileness is still exalted, but Jesus is on the throne, he has the keys, the Devil and his angels are booted out of heaven, his time is short, but ours is eternal. "7 You, O LORD, will keep them; you will guard us from this generation forever."
For ever!
My prayer - thank you LORD that because of you, because of Jesus, because of the cross we can end this Psalm on a note of praise for all you have done.
