Pressure and Praise
Psalm 6
1 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David. O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled.
3 My soul also is greatly troubled.
But you, O LORD—how long?
4 Turn, O LORD, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?
6 I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eye wastes away because of grief;
it grows weak because of all my foes.
8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled; they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.
Thoughts -
Stringed instruments produce music through various methods of sound production, primarily plucking, bowing, striking, and in some cases, blowing.
- The strings are brought under some type of stress and the musician can inturn produce beautiful music from these methods.
- No one including myself is ever a fan of correction, it's painful and it can feel like an eternity (verse 3 - how long?). David in psalm six pleads with GOD not to rebuke him in anger or discipline in wrath. We've all had earthly fathers, or people in parental authority over us that did not do this well and we can have an unhealthy expectation that GOD will do the same. GOD however loves us like no other and his correction of us is perfect.
Proverbs 12:1 and Hebrews 12:6
- The pressure GOD applies is designed not to break strings, or harm the instrument, but to create a song of praise because he loves you as his child.
- At the end of the Psalm David is again assured that GOD has heard and accepted his prayer, but the timing is always GOD's you don't get to choose the length anymore than which strings get pressure or which get strummed or plucked, the song writer/musician decides this and his motivation is love.
My prayer is that when correction comes and if your like me its not a matter of if, it's when. GOD will create a beautiful song of praise in your life and who knows it may even be "psalm" worthy.
