Who's your Daddy?
Psalm 59
To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me;
2 deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.
3 For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O LORD,
4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready. Awake, come to meet me, and see!
5 You, LORD God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah
6 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city.
7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths
with swords in their lips— for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?”
8 But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my Strength, I will watch for you, for you, O God, are my fortress.
10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.
11 Kill them not, lest my people forget; make them totter by your power and bring them down, O Lord, our shield!
12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13 consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, that they may know that God rules over Jacob to the ends of the earth. Selah
14 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city.
15 They wander about for food and growl if they do not get their fill.
16 But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.
Psalm 59 Thoughts:
verse 1
Just like Saul our enemy knows where we live, but don't forget the Apostle John's words of encouragement to us from 1 John 4:4 — Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
"The enemy may know our address, but we know his final destination."
Children of Belial (bel-e-yah'-a)
Genesis 3:15 — I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
"His offspring" - ancient serpent, the devil and (the) Satan, the deceiver
the comparison
Her offspring = Abraham's offspring
Galatians 3:29 — And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
They were among David's enemies.
Psalm 59:14-15 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. They wander about for food and growl if they do not get their fill.
They were (and still are) among the nations.
Genesis 19:4-5 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”
They were among the Israelites.
Judges 19:22-23 As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, worthless fellows, surrounded the house, beating on the door. And they said to the old man, the master of the house, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may know him.” And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, do not do this vile thing.
They were among the men who also rode with David.
1 Samuel 30:22 — Then all the wicked and worthless fellows among the men who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except that each man may lead away his wife and children, and depart.”
They are among those who set on thrones in the divine council. Spirts of Belial
Psalm 82 :1-2 A Psalm of Asaph. God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
They were among the Sanhedrin, the Pharisees, elders and rulers.
John 8:44 — You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
modus operandi
They prefer to operate in the dark.
Job 4:12-18 — “Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it. Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error;
Luke 22:53 — When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” (approx. around 3:00 am)
The two spiritual children compared.
Matthew 13:24-30 24 — He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants[d] of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”
They went out from us. (they were and are in Church)
If the Devil can enter Judas and sit at the same table with Jesus, don't be surprised at the above title or John's insight.
1 John 2:18-19 — Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
My thought in examining this Psalm in this light is not to make you paranoid, but aware, not worried, but wise. Don't go out of your way looking for the Devil's children, Jesus came to seek and save the lost. That's what we are suppose to be doing as well. Jesus didn't go looking for the Devil or demons, but he did run into them quite frequently.
My prayer for you and me is actually found in what Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 10:16, Heavenly Father as you send us out as sheep in the midst of wolves, Holy Spirit help us to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Teach us to sing like David about your strength and steadfast love knowing we are safe in your presence, our fortress. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.
