The Power and Love
Psalm 62
1 To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
3 How long will all of you attack a man
to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
9 Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,
12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
Thoughts:
Verse 1 - Silence and Waiting
Silence is uncomfortable and who really likes waiting? Does it feel sometimes like GOD is silent? Does it feel like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling? Do you feel like you've been waiting forever?
David reminds us that we are not alone, there is silence and waiting, but rest assured GOD's salvation will come. At just the right time Jesus came to save us. Romans 5:6 — For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
He came before and he will do so again.
Are you looking for GOD to speak to you today? Read his word. Are you looking for a fresh word from GOD? I would ask you if you have you read all the things that GOD has already revealed? Have you read all of the 66 books, where in GOD has already revealed himself? Jesus told the two on the Emmuas road in Luke 24: 27 - And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Why are you searching the Scriptures?
Jesus said in John 5:39 — You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.
Are you searching for the right reasons?
1) Are you experiencing silence?
Read GOD's word.
2) Are you still waiting?
Read GOD's word.
Verse 2
Even when GOD is your rock, salvation, and fortress you can be shaken, just not "greatly" shaken.
Verses 3-4
As you are probably well aware some of the Israelites were for David, some were not. We are told in 1 Timothy 2:1-3 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior.
Is GOD looking for you to attack and batter them, to knock them down? The question you have to ask is What pleases our Saviour?
Verse 5 - 6 is a repeat of verses 1 -2
Do you suppose David is trying to hammer home a point?
Verse 7
If your salvation (deliverance, salvation, rescue, safety, welfare, prosperity, victory) rests on GOD alone, does he need your help?
Nope, just your obedience.
Romans 10:9 — because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Verse 8
1) Trust him - How often? At all times.
2) He wants to know, one thing, a few things that's troubling you? No he wants to know everything in your heart, pour it all out.
3) He is our shelter from storm, danger, and falsehood.
He has power ove all storms - see Mark 4:39
Danger runs away from him - see Rev 20:11
Falsehood tried and Jesus sent him packing. - see Matt 4:10 & James 4:7
Verse 9 - Making Light of Them
Mans life is short and those who seem to have it all are found wanting on GOD's scales. The breath of a low estator is weightier than many of a high estate. In that view you could stick Satan and his buddies on one side of the scale and a single soul saved by GOD's grace on the other side and it shows that the rebels are just a bunch of delusional light weights.
🤠(yeah I just wrote that)
Verse 10 - Extortion, Robbery, and Riches
No trust, vain hopes, and gains in riches, but remember that Jesus asked us this question in Matthew 16:26 — For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? or 1 Timothy 6:7 — for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.
Instead of extortion - peace, Instead of robbery -
Verses 11 - 12
Tells us that true power and steadfast love belongs to GOD. This reminds me of the song from the movie Back to the Future, called "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News.
Back from the Future! (why? because GOD inhabitants eternity)
Isaiah 57:15 — For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
My prayer, that you would know the hight and depth of GOD's love for you and come to the knowledge that in him is all power and steadfast love and because of that even though you maybe shaken you are never "greatly" shaken because you are anchored to the rock of our salvation, Jesus Christ, amen.
