A smoking hot body won't get you anywhere.
Leviticus Chapters 10 & 16
Aaron's sons Nadab, Abihu are perfect examples of both holding high positions in a place GOD had chosen to put is name and also given the responsibility for taking care of that sacred space. This is teachable moment for us and a incredibly hard lesson for Aaron and his family.
- they offered fire with incense that was not authorized and in response fire from the LORD consumed them.
- They knew what was required and we get a possible insight into the reason for their slip in judgement. Notice GOD speaks directly to Aaron not through Moses, and gives Aaron the command "Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations." Leviticus 10:9
- when someone we love dies suddenly without explanation our obvious response is to ask why?
Why did it happen? Could I have done something to prevent it? Without closure we are usually tormented by the tragedy. We long for an explanation, a reason, it a natural part of the grieving process. Notice Aaron doesn't say anything after GOD tells him this, why? Because Aaron knows his son's.
- GOD had forewarned them in Exodus 30:9 before any of this had happened.
- in Leviticus 16 GOD tells Moses to tell Aaron he cannot go at anytime behind the veil and stand before the Mercy seat which is on the ark. Which suggests that maybe the two sons attempted this very thing.
- It is written that they died before the LORD, but it also is written that they were carried away from the front of the Sanctuary. My question did they die before the LORD inside the veil and the bodies were moved out in front of the Sanctuary or were they on their way in when it happened?
- after all this happens, sometime later in the day, Moses is concerned about following GOD's commands. He is upset with Aaron and his other nephews because he thought the goat of the sin offering for that day was completely burnt up and not eaten by them as it should of been. Aaron tells Moses that Eleazar and Ithamar, his surviving son's offered their sin offering and burnt offering before the LORD. He did not however because he didn't think the LORD would approve if he did because guess what Aaron was ticked at the LORD and he probably also blamed himself for what happened. It is written in the text that Moses' accepted that explanation and GOD's silence on this matter speaks volumes too.
- So what is the take away for us? If a person has accepted Christ Jesus into their life and GOD has chosen to put his name there. This is now sacred space, be careful not to upset the Holy Spirit because GOD is a consuming fire. Ephesians 4:30
- Also for the right reasons GOD understands when you're ticked at him and doesn't hold it against you.
