Not Your Home.

Not Your Home.

Psalm 5 ESV

1 To the choirmaster: for the flutes.
A Psalm of David.
Give ear to my words, O LORD;
consider my groaning.
2 Give attention to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God, for to you do I pray.
3 O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.
5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in the fear of you.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.
9 For there is no truth in their mouth;
their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Thoughts -

- Who is on your throne?
Depending on when David wrote this Psalm he may not have actually been king yet, but Samuel had annointed him as such. In verse 2 the king states that the LORD is his GOD and King.
- David's prayer life began in the morning.
- David knew that GOD heard his voice.
- In verse 7 some scholars believe that this psalm was written later because it mentions David entering GOD'S house and bowing down toward the Holy Temple. This would seem to suggest this was the Solomon's temple. My thought however is David pictures himself entering GOD's heavenly house and bowing before the one that Moses saw on the mountain, which the earthly one was patterned after. Hebrews 11:6 ESV puts it into perspective - But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
- remember daily where your home country is and where your alegences lay.
- like David take refuge and rejoice in the LORD, singing with joy.
- Those who love your name - "Jesus"
- You are blessed and shielded.

David experienced trouble in this life, Jesus was crucified. The blessings and shielding will be eternal, this life is but a flicker compared to what awaits us.

My prayer, that we would fix our eyes on our heavenly country being reminded daily of who we are in Christ and where we are headed, "home". While we are here in our temporary dwelling may we work like Jesus did making sure to love and live in such a way as to leave things better than we found them, the Holy Spirit being our helper.
