Annihilationism or Eternal Conscious Punishment

Seeing the Truth in Print

Psalm 40

1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.

2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!

5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.

7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.

10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!

12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!

14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!”

17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!

Have you ever read a book so riveting that the author has a way of pulling you into his or her story? Their words seem to leap off page and come alive. This is exactly what GOD did for us in Christ Jesus, the "Word of GOD" became flesh, leaped off the scroll, the page and became one of us and lived among us.

Moses tells us in Deuteronomy 18:18 — I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

In Psalm 40:7 above — Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

The author of Hebrews 10:7 — Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

The apostle John 1:14 wrote — And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Are some people searching the Scriptures for the wrong things? - Jesus tell people in John 5:39 — You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, (the scriptures point to Jesus.) Just like in life it's not all that important "what" you know, it's "who" you know that make all the difference. Do you know Jesus?

Road to Emmaus - Luke 24: 25-27
And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Notice Jesus didn't say some of what Moses wrote or a few of the prophets, but Moses and "all" the prophets. As he was educating on the road to Emmaus. I can imagine either then or later on the rulers, principalities, and powers would learn about all this too. They had a vested interest in knowing when the Messiah would appear and they dropped the ball and did exactly what GOD wanted, they killed the King of Glory. They must have been seriously beating their heads off rocks in unbelief that they missed it. They had poured over the texts, the prophecies, the signs and they came up wanting.  The rebels would be looking to their leader the one who was the epitome of wisdom - Ezekiel 28:12 ESV — “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord GOD: “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. I can also imagine him doing a Homer Simpson DOH! facepalm. The Devil use to be full of wisdom and now and he's just full of himself.

How's that working out for you Mr. Devil?

Fast forward to today Nov 24, 2025 and him and his buddies continue pouring through Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel and on and on. No doubt they are monkeying with things trying and mess up timelines or possible series of events. No matter what they plan or do they missed it the first time around and the next won't go any better for them. If for some reason you think you got it all figured out, I'm talking about end times, my question to you is are you smarter than a 6,000ish or older created being? (I'm certainly no where close.)

- Verse nine of Psalm 40 is the example of the completed, but not yet fully realized from our earthly perspective. (the late Dr. Heiser put it this way - "already but not yet", describing its present reality and future fulfillment.) Jesus has already announced deliverance in the great congregation, when he lead captivity captive and gave gifts to people. Those of us in the here and now are still waiting along with those who have yet to make a decision for Christ.

- Verse ten Jesus made an open display of it for all to see and all the world to read and hear about. GOD's faithfulness, GOD's salvation, GOD's steadfast love.

- verse elven the psalmist reiterates all these and mentions GOD's unrestrained mercy towards him and us.

- Verse twelve and thirteen reminds us that no amount of external evil, no amount of our own sin will prevent GOD from helping us. Paul puts this way in Romans 8:38-39  — For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

- Verse fourteen reminds the Devil and the other rebels they will receive shame and disappointment. The rulers, principalities, and powers received it on resurrection Sunday and in the vein of thought  "already but not yet" they will receive it again at Christ's return and at the end of the thousand year reign. You would think that loosing once would be enough, but no their aiming for perfection, their going for three times. Aha!, Aha!, Aha! three strikes and your out, game over.

My prayer for you echo's the last two verses of Psalm 40, GOD we rejoice and are glad because of our salvation through Jesus Christ our LORD. You are indeed great and greatly to be praised. When we were poor and needed you remembered us on the cross and you are our help and deliverer. At just the right time you were there for each one of us, the only delay is our own in accepting your extravagant gift, O My GOD.
