POSION ON A STICK
Psalm 69
1 To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. Of David. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.
2I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.
4 More in number than the hairs of my head
are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?
5 O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
6 Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.
7 For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.
9 For zeal for your house has consumed me,
and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
12 I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14 Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.
15 Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.
16 Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17 Hide not your face from your servant,
for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies!
19 You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.
20 Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
22 Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.
23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.
24 Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
27 Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
29 But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the LORD more than an ox
or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32 When the humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33 For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.
34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36 the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
Psalm 69 thoughts
Verses 1-3
The Psalmist starts out by crying for help, he's up to his neck, boots deep, Hos voice is shot from calling fir help and his tear ducts are bone dry. Have you been there? Are you having one of those days, weeks, months, years. Hang on, don't give up GOD's got this and you ...don't loose faith and hope.
Verae 4 Hated without Cause
John 15:25 — But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
John 1:11 — He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
GOD loves those he created, some are spirits of wind and fire (Hebrews 1:7) and some are spirits of breath and dust (Gen 2:7). Those who have chosen the path of rebellion have hated our creator without reason.
David as a shadow of Christ has experienced this first hand. David writes that they attacked him with lies. The father of lies would also employ the similar tatics. Jesus said in John 8:44 — You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Notice the Devil does not stand in the Truth. The Word is truth, Jesus is the Word and the Devil wants nothing to do with the Truth.
Why do some people reject, malign, and manufacture thier own truth? Because they are just like thier father and they want nothing to do with Jesus.
Verses 5-6
David recognized that he has done stupid things and "wrongs" and they are not hidden from GOD. David's song, his prayer is that people who hope in GOD are not be put to shame because of him and also those that seek GOD not be brought to dishonor because of something he himself has done.
I pray that too of myself, that I would not be a stumbling block for anyone seeking the LORD because of something stupid I've done. I've heard the analogy from, I believe it was Frank Turick, - If someone plays Beethoven poorly you don't blame Beethoven and if a Christian reflects (plays) Jesus poorly you don't blame Jesus.
Verses 7-8
a stranger and an alien to my mother’s sons.
Mark 3:21 — And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
Sometimes family can drive you crazy 🤪
and other times they just think your are.
1 Corinthians 1:25 — For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Isn't that just crazy?
Verse 9
Mar 11:15-17 — And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”
Leviticus 25:14 — And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another.
Not only we're they being wronged they were being wronged in GOD's house and under the High Priest, GOD's earthly representive and authority.
Jesus was approximately 33-34 years of age before he died. How many times would he have walked past the money changers and sellers in the temple before this day?
On this day he finally had enough.
There is coming a day aptly named "Day of the LORD", on which GOD will have had enough.

Verses 10-20
The Psalmist fasted, humbled himself, and put on sackcloth. People in the city who saw him looked down at him, alcoholics made fun of him through songs. This too is a shadow of Christ Jesus. He willingly clothed himself in frail humanity, like putting on sackcloth. The Author of life came down and the ones he gave life to looked down on him.
John 1:11 — He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
Isaiah 53:3-12 — He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Verse 21
The Snake and his children serve a mean meal, poison and sour wine.
Matthew 27:41-42
So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,“He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Matthew 27:48 — And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
In my imagination Jesus would have rated the meal worse than Volcano Pizza (Pizza Vulkanen) at 1.5 outta 5
The Snake serves up sour wine, posion, and death. The Son desires to give us living water, bread from heaven, and eternal life. Which one sounds more appetizing to you?
Every place that posion has knowly been snuck into our food supply chain or has been repackaged as healthcare I belive is the Ancient Serpent and his children offering up the sour wine soaked sponge on the end of stick for Jesus' brothers and sisters (Hebrews 2:11), hoping that we too will just drink (eat) and die quickly.
The Devil is a rotten Sous-chef.
Verses 22-28
The Psalmist asks GOD to make the table they set become a trap and a snare for the rebels. We get a picture of this in the beloved Psalm 23:5 — You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Matthew 8:11-12 —I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
The Psalmist says they will be blinded and fearful, the anger of the LORD will burn towards them. Thier tents will be empty, The persecution and pain they inflicted will return to rest on them. It will be piled on them and finally most devastating of all thier name will be blotted out, remove from the book of life. In thier zeal to reject the author of life, he will give them thier request by erasing them from his book.
Verse 29
To say Jesus was afflicted and in pain would be the understatement of all understatements. Beaten, wiped, crucified, and your sin, my sin laid on him who knew no sin. Afflicted and pain don't even begin to come close to accurately describing the situation. Then afterwards, GOD did indeed set him on high, see Ephesians 1:20 — that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,
Verse 30-36
- Skip the animal sacrifice says the Psalmist, but instead offer up praise, and thanksgiving, this will be pleasing in his sight.
- Seek the LORD and watch your heart revive.
- GOD frees the prisoners and sets the captives free. The mission of Jesus.
- All of creation will praise the LORD, not because he demands it, but because he is worthy of all our praises.
- GOD will build the city and it will be perfect.
Revelation 21:2 — And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- ... he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. (Part of Isaiah 53:10)

My prayer is that we would daily offer up praise and thanks to GOD because he is worthy and thay we would daily fall deeper in love with Jesus, amen.
