Genesis Chapters 28, 29 and 30
As we continue in Jacob’s part in His-story to better understand where Jacob is coming from and growing in his belief and trust in GOD. We need to look at his interaction with his father Isaac back in the tent while he is disguised as his brother Esau. Isaac though aged and with eyesight failing questions how fast Esau (Jacob) was able to hunt, kill, prepare, and cook the meal placed before him. Notice Jacob’s response to his father, “Because the Lord your God granted me success.” The Lord Isaac’s GOD, not mine, not ours, but his father’s God. This is an insight into Jacob’s belief system. Keep this in mind moving forward, just because someone comes from Abraham does not instantly make them a follower of GOD, no matter how you dress it up, circumcision, outward appearances do not cut it, it is what lies beneath, it’s the heart of the matter.
- Isaac finds out about the plan his wife has successfully pulled off in deceiving him with Jacob's help and why she did it. He realizes she is correct and he does not want Jacob marrying anyone from the area like his brother Esau did.
- He calls Jacob back to himself and him and Rebekah send him away and bless him saying go to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah and find a wife.
- Esau tries to appease his parents and takes a third wife from his relative Ishmael, Abraham’s son.
- Jacob’s dream at Bethel, GOD’s promises, Jacob calls it God’s house and the gateway of heaven.
We are going to park here for a moment I want you to look at the promises GOD makes to Jacob and the conditions he puts on him. Then look at the conditions Jacob puts on the LORD, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God.” If you protect me, feed me, cloth me and bring be safely back to my parents, then I will make you my God and trust you, but not until then. This is very telling of Jacobs heart and mind it is also a good description of where some of us are at times. We have GOD’s great and precious promises, he has given us his son Jesus, GOD has gone above and beyond to demonstrate his love to us and yet like Jacob we say, unless you do this for me, fill in your request - do ________, or I will not believe in you or trust in what you have said or promised. I am not pointing fingers because I can point it right back at myself, I was that person. I said "I won’t believe in you unless you come and speak directly to me", that in a nutshell was my request. Thank GOD for his patience, mercy, and grace with me. Instead of a slap upside the head which I deserved he showed me love. This is also what he displayed toward Jacob. I hope you went and looked for yourself at GOD’s conditions that he put on Jacob, …… nothing.
