The pen or the sword? It's on the tip of my tongue.
Psalm 45
1 To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah; a love song.
My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
I address my verses to the king;
my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.
2 You are the most handsome of the sons of men; grace is poured upon your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
3 Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and majesty!
4 In your majesty ride out victoriously
for the cause of truth and meekness and righteousness; let your right hand teach you awesome deeds!
5 Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; the peoples fall under you.
6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.
The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness;
7 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;
8 your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad;
9 daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.
10 Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear: forget your people and your father’s house,
11 and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him.
12 The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people.fn
13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold.
14 In many-colored robes she is led to the king, with her virgin companions following behind her.
15 With joy and gladness they are led along
as they enter the palace of the king.
16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons;
you will make them princes in all the earth.
17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.
In Psalm 45 verses one through three the Psalmist is descrinbing the King. Perhaps Solomon or David, but prophetically it works for Jesus in his resurrected body too.
Read and compare Revelation 1: 13-16
Points:
- one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
- white hair looked like wool, like snow.
- His eyes looked like a flame of fire,
- feet looked like flame, refined burnished bronze
- his voice sounded like the roar of many waters.
- he held seven stars in his right hand.
- his face was blinding it was like looking into the full strength of the sun.
- I find it interesting that the Psalmist in the first verse describes his own tongue like "the pen" of a ready scribe". In Revelation one verse sixteen John describes Jesus' tongue like a sharp two-edged sword. A reminder Jesus's words won't be as soft when he returns.
- verse 4 compare Zechariah 9:9 ESV — Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
In the incarnation Jesus came riding a donkey, but "victorious" is seen not in the moment, but looking backwards from the resurrection to the cross hindsight is 20/20. Especially in this case, he came in truth, meekness, and righteousness.
- verse five GOD's arrows are sharp in the heart of his enemies. The rulers, principalities, and powers felt it, the Devil was shot and fell like light lightening. See Luke 10:18
- verse 6 GOD's throne is forever, his scepter is righteousness.
When king Nebuchadnezzar came to his senses in Daniel 4:34 he said — At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
- verse 7 he loves righteousness and hated wickedness. Compare that to Hebrews 1:9
- verses 13 and 14 describes the bride and her virgin companions. We know that the Church is the bride of Christ, but who is the virgin companions? Take a look at Revelation 14: 1 to 5 - Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are blameless.
Verse 16 shows that we will be the ones that replace the fallen rebel sons of GOD,
"you (GOD) will make them princes (those who Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers, Hebrews 2:11 ) in all the earth."
Verse 17 is seen in Revelation chapter 7, the nations will praising him through all generations - 9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
My prayer As people are experiencing a new type of freedom around our world, in Venezuela, in Iran, and other places. I pray they would come to know the Way, the Truth, and the Life that gives true freedom for our souls and they too would join the great multitude around the throne praising Jesus, our great GOD and lamb.
Keep them in prayer.
