The Eyes Have It
Psalm 54
1 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskilf of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “Is not David hiding among us?” O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might.
2O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Selah
4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.
5 He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them.
6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
7 For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.
Thoughts on Psalm 54:
The immediate question comes to mind who were the Ziphites?
In 1 Samuel 23:19 we read — Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of Jeshimon?
Most commentaries and scholars agree that Ziph was located high on a plateau and some of the people of Ziph, who were thought to be of the same tribe of David (Judah), had observed David and his men coming and going and were aware of thier hideout. They immediately ran and told Saul that David was hiding amongst them. A few commentaries have suggested it was out of fear of what had been done at Nob. All the people and priests of that place were killed. Which they believed to be the best reason why the people of Ziph gave up the location of David and his men to Saul.
We would see a similar situation play out with Jesus. Judas betrayed him, knowing where he would be and then leading the high priests soliders directly to him.
Verse 4
David sings about GOD being his helper and the sustainer of his life. Which we see when Saul goes after David and just before he's about to find him news comes to Saul by way of a messenger that the Philistines had raided the land. See 1 Samuel 26 -28
... As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.
Verse 5 and 6
GOD would indeed put an end to David's enemies, both the seen and unseen. Saul and eventually the Devil. GOD rescued David from Saul hand and Jesus would come and set the captives free (Ephesians 4:8 and Matt 27:52-53) of which David was one of them. On that day David would definitely be offering sacrifices of thanksgiving.
Verse 7
GOD indeed delivered David out of every trouble even the grave. Psalm 16:10 — For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
David's eyes did get to look on the triumph over his enemies. When Jesus defeated the Satan on the cross - Colossians 2:15 reads — He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. I also believe from Heavens vantage point David witnessed the great prince Michael kick the Devil's butt - Revelation 12:7-8 — Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
Hey Mr Devil, you got crushed by the heel (Genesis 3:15), you got the boot (Revelation 12:7-8) and David will probably get to see you chained (Revelation 20:2) and then he will be there for your inaugural plunge (Rev 20:10)
David - "my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies."
Yes indeed, the eyes have it.
My prayer is Jesus's own words to his disciples about thier victory over the spirits in Luke 10:20 — Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Heavenly Father we do not rejoice because we have triumphed over our enemies, but we rejoice because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross and that you have written our names in the book of life, thank you.
